A day in the life of an Autistic Child

Autism is a developmental disorder that impacts a person's behavior, communication, learning, and social interactions. Like most days, today was filled with social challenges and sensory stimulation. The classroom's bright lights appeared to produce an, annoying sound. I was unable to determine the source of the painful irritation that was caused by the rough collar on my dress. I made an effort to concentrate on the lecturer's speech, but the surrounding noise was really distracting.

I wanted to get away and simply go somewhere peaceful. However, I received the impression that the lesson was moving quickly and that I needed to keep up. I wanted to interact with my classmates since we had been given a group assignment, but they didn't appear to care and my voice was not heard. My lecturer then noticed my weird behaviour  and chased me out of the class with harsh words.

For me, the mere act of switching between activities and initiatives has always been difficult. I find it difficult to participate in all school-related activities when routines abruptly alter since it causes me to feel overwhelmed and frightened. I don't participate in any activities with my peers. When I'm told to express myself or join groups, I develop social anxiety. But I kept going because I wanted to understand and be understood.

I envision a more tolerant, inclusive, and accepting environment for neurodiversity. A place where I can be who I am without worrying about criticism or misinterpretation. I will continue learning, developing, and fighting for a brighter future for myself and other people with autism.
