Heavy gunfire erupts in South Sudan capital of Juba

Heavy gunfire broke out on November 21, 2024, in the South Sudanese capital of Juba, centered around the residence of former intelligence chief Akol Koor Kuc, who has been under house arrest since his dismissal in October. Security forces and Koor's guards exchanged fire in the upscale Thongpiny area for about an hour, leading to injuries and significant unrest. The incident reflects underlying political tensions following Koor's removal by President Salva Kiir, amid broader struggles within South Sudan's transitional government. The UN issued a shelter-in-place order for its personnel during the violence

This violence occurs against a backdrop of postponed national elections and lingering divisions within the government, which have periodically resulted in clashes despite a 2018 peace agreement between factions loyal to Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar
