Four new sugar factories are under construction to help Kenya produce enough sugar and minimize importations. President Dr William Ruto while addressing the nation in Parliament said the reforms implemented in the sugar sector have seen a surge in production of the commodity with 17 sugar factories now operational.
The President said that the surplus production has been made possible by the fertilizer subsidy program for farmers with Kenya now able to meet the local consumption demand.
In his speech the President said that Kenya is now producing excess sugar, thanks to efforts by the government’s subsidized fertilizer.
Meanwhile, President Ruto noted that Kenya currently boasts of substantial national stocks of 47 million bags of 90 kg of maize, which are currently in the stores, and 8.8 million 90 kg bags of beans.
