Ongoing Lecturers’ Strike in Kenya: Impact and Demands

The ongoing lecturers' strike in Kenya has brought the education sector to a standstill, affecting thousands of students in public universities across the country. The strike, which began in late October 2024, is the result of unresolved issues between university staff and the government.

Lecturers, represented by the University Academic Staff Union (UASU), are demanding the government fulfill agreements made in previous Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs). These agreements include improved salary scales, better working conditions, and the payment of arrears that have been pending for years. The lecturers argue that the government has failed to honor these agreements despite repeated promises, leading to the current strike action.

The strike has led to widespread disruption in learning, with university lectures, examinations, and research activities all halted. Students have expressed frustration over the prolonged shutdown, as their academic schedules have been severely delayed. Many are now concerned about the potential impact on their graduation timelines and future career prospects.

The government has acknowledged the strike but has pointed to financial constraints as the primary reason for the delay in meeting the lecturers’ demands. However, critics argue that the government has not prioritized education in its budget allocation and that the continued neglect of lecturers' welfare undermines the quality of education in the country.

As the strike continues, the Ministry of Education and the university administrations are under increasing pressure to find a solution. Negotiations are ongoing, but with no clear resolution in sight, the strike remains a major concern for both students and educators alike.
