Popular culture of bullfighting in kakamega ,western kenya

Bullfighting in Kakamega has a strong cultural root among the Luhya community especially the idakho and the isukha subcommunities, where it is seen as a form of tradition, entertainment, way to showcase bravery and strength. In the past it was a social event bringing together families and communities during special events such as marriages, celebrating a diseased leader and swearing in new leaders like chiefs. The event involves two bulls fighting in an arena with spectators cheering the match. However, the culture has gained popularity in the past five years leading to more spectators and fans from other Luhya subcommunities, Kenyan communities and also attracting persons across the borders. Every weekend people travel from different parts of the world to go to western Kenya to go and experience the awesome culture of the Luhya community. People travel as far as from Nairobi in the city of Kenya to every weekend to experience the sport Reasons for popularity in the past five year 1. Culture revival and preservation. Over the past five years there has been a growing interest in preserving traditional customs and practices in this face of modernization. Events like bullfighting tend to connect the Genz, millennials and the old generation with their cultural heritages. Community elders have emphasized on the importance of these traditions which has led to resurgence of the sport

2 Economic  Opportunities . Bullfighting has increasingly become an economic venture for local communities. Every Saturday the event attracts large crowds and in some cases tourists. This provides an opportunity for local businesses to profit through food and drinks sale, sale of traditional ornaments, Bnbs ,bars and restaurants  industries also benefit a lot.

Despite its popularity bullfighting has also come with a lot of challenges and problems like addiction to the sport, betting and gambling where people risk their assets for the game, community revelry which might at once end up in community clashes.
