President-elect Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to bring down high prices. If implemented, two of his flagship policy proposals could actually have the opposite effect.
The former and now-future president has proposed a 20% tariff on U.S. imports that is already expected to raise prices for consumers. But economists are warning that a second signature Trump policy — a plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrants from the U.S. — could also push up prices.
The mass-deportation plan would disrupt industries that rely on immigrant labor, they argue, including agriculture and construction. It would create worker shortages and slow down production — and eventually make food, housing and other items more expensive.
All immigrants should be registered
