BlueSky is a decentralized social media platform created by former Twitter employees. Its development began in 2019 when Twitter's CEO at the time, Jack Dorsey, announced the project with the goal of creating an open-source, decentralized social network. The idea behind BlueSky is to give users more control over their social media experience by allowing them to choose from different content moderation and algorithmic options, as opposed to being subject to the decisions of a central authority like a company.
Ownership:
BlueSky is not directly owned by a single company. It is operated by a nonprofit organization called BlueSky, Inc. This organization oversees the development of the platform and is focused on the decentralized nature of the project.
While it originated with Twitter's backing, the project is now independent, and its structure is designed to allow third-party developers and organizations to build their own platforms on top of the same decentralized protocol (called AT Protocol).
So, while it started with Jack Dorsey’s initiative, BlueSky is now an independent, decentralized project that is not owned by any single entity.
